Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)
Protein Data Bank ID: 2HGD
Protein Name: GFP
Organism: Aequorea victoria (crystal jelly fish)
Title of Drawing: “The Fish”
The green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a luminescent molecule isolated from the jellyfish Aequorea victoria. Excitation with blue light causes emission in light green. In molecular biology GFP is commonly used for labeling. For their discovery and development of GFP Martin Chalfie, Osamu Shimomura, and Roger Y. Tsien were awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2008.
