About May K.

PhD biologist with a focus on neuroscience and neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer disease. During my diploma project I worked on the prediction of their 3D structures of proteins. Since that time, proteins became my passion. So I have continued working on them not only in my research but also in my spare time creating art out of nature.

I love your work! It’s very creative, and once I see what you’ve created from the proteins, I can’t see the actual model in the original way again. 🙂

Thank you! That’s the same with me, very often I’m giggling at symposia because I don’t see the actual protein but a dragon, a naked woman, or anything else I have drawn from the respective protein;)

I love your way of thinking!!! Awesome blog XD

I put it on my blog on the widgets so that no one is deprived of this coolness (nerdy or otherwise, no offence =P)

Oh and btw, It makes biochemistry so much more fun, because being a med student, I’m always looking for a way to make things stick in my Teflon protected brain =P

Thank you for featuring my Protein Art!:))) Yep, “Teflon protected brain”;) is partly a reason why I began with this stuff: I simply searched for a way to remember how all these proteins look like and their functions… and sometimes my hobby indeed turned out to be useful for my work)

Hi May K, thanks for following my blog. What you are creating here is amazing and inspirational, keep it up!

Hi, thanks for following me! Your art brings back memories of biology learning groups in highschool. It would have been neat to have your blog back then to help visualize the protein-structures.

    • May K. / Jan 31 2012 1:36 pm

Thank you for following my blog as well! It is my dream to create a book which would help students to understand and remember more about proteins. Lets see whether this dream will come true.;)

Thank you for following my blog. I could not find a place to give you my special reward for educedge subscriber, so i am posting here the link: http://sabinereljic.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/educedge-subscriber-badge1.png. Your blog is really cool. I like your eye. and I like your idea of making a book of those protein art drawings. I’d say go for it on Lulu.com to eliminate the middle man publisher. good luck.

    • May K. / Feb 9 2012 2:09 pm

Thank you so much for the cute reward!:) I’m so happy to hear that you like my idea. And thank you for sharing the advice to go to Lulu.com, I didn’t know about such a nice possibility. I will try hard to produce more drawings, so that there will be enough stuff for a book.

    Hi..
You have such a creative mind to make these drawings. I like the idea of making a bond between organisms and art. I wish you keep making those magnificent masterpieces. Also, I want to thank you for following. I hope you find my blog as interesting as yours. Best wishes..

    Hi May K,
Thanks for your interest in my blog. Coming from you I feel humbled. Am always awed at people like you who have gone and still going for higher studies. I have a daughter who just finished her PhD in Psychology majoring in Clinical Psychology. Her dissertation was about pediatric pain management. I hope you will have good news before I get that dreaded Alzheimer.

    • May K. / May 8 2012 2:12 pm

That’s also my hope… to make my modest contribution to this field.

Hi: I’ve awarded you the Kreativ Blogger award because your blog is inspiring. The details are on my Sketches & Jottings blog, here: http://bit.ly/ueraqC

Enjoy and thank you for your wonderful blog.

Thanks for following the Beagle Project. I enjoyed your protein art – and in general really like the overlap between art and science. I look forward to your new additions in the future.

Have you ever done a drawing based on luciferase?

    • May K. / May 29 2012 1:28 pm

Thank you too for your interest. That’s funny, actually a colleague of mine just recently asked me to draw luciferase. So I am actually working on it!:)

Hello May! Thank you so much for following my blog. I am absolutely enjoying yours!
Love your description of the proteins as well; makes total sense to me 😉

Incorporating arts into science bakes biochem so much fun!

    I look forward for more…

    • May K. / Aug 30 2012 3:59 pm

I’m very glad to hear that my text about the protein art makes sense:), as I was afraid that my description is a bit confusing.

I was very happy to read that you like my interpretation of proteins. Thank you for the nice comment!

I just stumbled upon your books and I’m very curious to take a look at them, as a research related novel written by a scientist is exactly what I was looking for).

Dear May, I’ve just nominated your blog a Leibster Award on my blog, because quite frankly, it’s one of the coolest blogs ever. Enjoy and have a great day! I do look forward to your posts!

    • May K. / Oct 28 2013 8:34 am

      Dear Naomi,
thank you so much for the nomination!:))) That was really great news!

  18. Brian / Jan 26 2015 6:22 pm

I would like to commission a work (which I would pay for of course). 1URN
